Delivering zero waste
to landfill at Twycross Zoo

Since 2016, we have delivered hard facilities management services at Twycross Zoo, supporting over 120 buildings across a 100-acre, live visitor environment.

In partnership with the Zoo, we have transformed waste management into a fully auditable, zero waste to landfill operation – enhancing environmental performance without disrupting daily operations.

The challenge

Twycross Zoo’s conservation-led mission set strong environmental foundations, but waste processes required greater structure, visibility, and efficiency. This needed to be achieved within a complex setting – a busy public attraction and home to over 500 animals – where operational continuity and welfare are critical.

The solution

We worked collaboratively with the Zoo to redesign waste services around four key priorities: zero waste to landfill, improved transparency, operational continuity, and cost efficiency.

Following service analysis and benchmarking, we appointed specialist contractor Briers to deliver a flexible, data-driven solution. Clear waste segregation processes, structured communication, and an open-book model ensured transparency and accountability across all stakeholders.

The impact

The initiative delivered measurable results within just two months:

100% zero waste to landfill achieved
Over 57 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill
9 fully segregated waste streams implemented
Full auditability through monthly reporting

The model also improved governance, enabled data-led decision-making, and delivered cost efficiencies through streamlined services.

Driving meaningful climate cation

This partnership demonstrates how facilities management can drive meaningful climate action. By embedding sustainable practices into daily operations, we have created a scalable, resilient model that supports both environmental goals and operational performance – helping Twycross Zoo continue its conservation mission while reducing its environmental impact.
