At WPS, World FM Day is an opportunity to reflect on the role we play in shaping the environments people rely on every day.
This year’s theme, ‘Cultivating belonging through built environments’, resonates deeply with who we are and how we operate as a hard FM provider.
We are trusted to maintain the places that matter most – workplaces, universities, and communities across the UK. But our role goes beyond keeping buildings operational. At WPS, we help create environments that feel safe, inclusive, and effortlessly cared for – spaces where people can thrive.
As part of the wider Wates Group, we also work closely with colleagues in Construction, bringing operational insight into conversations earlier in a building’s journey. This helps ensure that spaces are not only designed with intent but are set up to support the people who will use them every day.
Supporting spaces that support people
Hard FM is often seen as the backbone of a building – the unseen work that keeps systems running. But its impact is far more visible in how people experience a space.
Through well-maintained infrastructure, responsive service delivery, and forward-thinking planning, we create environments that actively support connection, wellbeing and inclusion. From ensuring lighting is optimal and systems are reliable, to addressing issues quickly and effectively – we remove friction from everyday experiences.
Our agility allows us to adapt to our customers’ challenges, working to their schedules and developing long-term roadmaps that improve performance over time. It’s this proactive, solutions-focused approach that enables us not just to maintain spaces, but to elevate them.
Designing for safety, comfort and confidence
A sense of belonging starts with feeling safe and comfortable. Well-maintained environments with collaborative areas and reliable systems encourage people to spend more time in shared spaces.
Through early engagement with design teams, we can help ensure that safety, accessibility, and maintainability are considered from the beginning – not retrofitted later. Whether it’s advising on asset selection or lifecycle planning, we contribute to environments that are easier to care for and better to experience.
Once in operation, this translates into seamless performance – from compliance and critical asset maintenance to enhancements that bring in natural elements. The result is spaces that people trust and enjoy using.
Enabling thriving workplaces and learning environments
In workplaces and learning environments, the importance of belonging cannot be overstated. Environments that foster collaboration, trust, and comfort are essential for wellbeing, reducing burnout, and enabling innovation.
Our role is to ensure these spaces function seamlessly, allowing organisations and institutions to focus on their people. From reactive maintenance to strategic asset management, we help create conditions where individuals and teams can perform at their best.
A people-first approach, built on trust
As part of the Wates Group, family values are part of our DNA. We build trusted, local teams that customers recognise – from the engineer fixing a leak to the account director identifying smarter ways to improve performance.
These relationships are what set us apart. They allow us to understand the unique needs of each environment and respond with care, consistency, and accountability.
Creating spaces where belonging thrives
This World FM Day, we’re proud to stand behind the spaces that support people every day. By focusing on safety, reliability, and continuous improvement, we help create environments that do more than function – they foster connection, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Because when spaces are cared for properly, people feel it. And that’s what belonging is built on.
