Meet the team: Liam Porter, Senior Account Manager

At WPS, our people are at the heart of everything we do. Through our ‘Meet the team’ series, we’re shining a spotlight on the individuals whose expertise, passion and commitment are helping to deliver positive outcomes for our customers, communities and partners.

In this edition, Liam Porter, Senior Account Manager in our Facilities Management business, shares his career journey, his approach to building successful partnerships and his experience of joining the inaugural WPS Development Board.

Building strong customer partnerships

As Senior Account Manager, I focus on delivering excellent services while building trusted partnerships that enable contracts to grow and evolve. We aim to get ahead of customers’ challenges, anticipate issues and identify smarter ways to improve performance.

Since joining WPS, my portfolio has expanded from the Hampshire Blue Light contract, maintaining the Police and Fire estate across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, to include SAS and a defence customer.

What I enjoy most is the variety. I’ve worked across facilities management, transformation programmes, mergers, contract mobilisations and operational leadership, but the common thread has always been people. I enjoy helping teams achieve great results and seeing the positive impact our services have on customers and everyone who uses their facilities.

A proud moment at WPS

One of my proudest achievements has been being selected for the WPS Development Board. It is a fantastic opportunity, particularly so early in my WPS journey. I’m proud to contribute beyond my day-to-day role, share ideas and help shape the future direction of the business.

Putting people at the heart of FM

The best account managers genuinely understand people. Facilities Management must have people at its heart, and success comes from building relationships, earning trust and understanding what matters the most to customers and teams. It’s this combination of local knowledge, lived experience and lasting relationships that helps us create places where life flows.

Emotional intelligence is essential: listening properly, appreciating different perspectives, recognising concerns early and adapting your approach. Customers want to feel heard and valued; teams want to feel supported, trusted and empowered.

Commercial awareness and operational performance matter, but the strongest results come when people are engaged and aligned behind a common goal. A great Account Manager creates that environment through honest conversations and long-term trust.

Connecting people around a common goal

Throughout my career, I’ve worked with frontline teams, senior leaders, board members and customers across many industries. Strong relationships and open communication can solve most problems. Operational teams provide invaluable insight into service delivery, while customers bring a clear view of wider business priorities. Bringing those perspectives together leads to better decisions and stronger partnerships.

Never underestimate the importance of listening. Asking the right questions and creating an environment where people feel comfortable sharing their views builds trust. Effective account management is about connecting people, understanding different priorities and ensuring everyone works towards the same outcome.

An industry full of opportunity

Facilities Management offers a huge range of opportunities, with no single route into the industry. Working across different sectors, roles and challenges has helped me develop new skills and perspectives.

For me, a successful FM career is about more than operational and commercial results. It is about bringing people together, building trust and creating environments where teams, customers and communities can thrive – helping shape the facilities of the future through relationships that last.
