This National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke to Natalie Wilson, SHEQ Manager for WPS Facilities Management, about how her apprenticeship was more than a starting point – it laid the foundations for a career that continues to grow and evolve.

Earning, learning and gaining practical experience

“I studied Facilities Management through a structured apprenticeship route, spending four days a week working and one day dedicated to my studies. Being able to earn, learn and gain practical experience at the same time gave me early exposure to the realities of the built environment and a strong grounding in how the industry operates.

“As part of my apprenticeship, I rotated across several business functions, including asset management, finance, sustainability, marketing and health and safety (H&S). It was during my time working within H&S that I found something that really resonated. I was fortunate to work with a team who were generous with their time and knowledge, and who showed me the scale, complexity and responsibility involved in managing risk.

Turning compliance into care

“I began to see H&S not as a compliance exercise, but as a discipline that directly affects people, ensuring they go home safe and well every day. I completed my first H&S qualification during this time and went on to progress my career in SHEQ-focused roles across the industry, building experience across different environments and challenges.

“What continues to attract me to SHEQ is the balance it offers: working with people, solving problems and making a tangible impact. It’s about understanding how work is really done, helping people think and act safely, and building resilient, effective teams. The learning never stops, and no two days are the same.

Building skills that last

“Some of the most valuable skills I gained through my apprenticeship were confidence, communication and the importance of building a strong professional network. Having access to people who are willing to share their experience can make all the difference early in your career.

“For anyone considering an apprenticeship in the built environment or property services, my advice is simple: go for it. The industry offers huge variety and opportunity, and apprenticeships allow you to explore different paths while gaining experience and qualifications at the same time.

“Now, as SHEQ Manager and a member of the FM leadership team, I’m excited to bring that experience with me and to support the next generation coming in. If you’re looking for a career that offers challenge, variety and real impact, FM – and an apprenticeship – can take you further than you might first think.”
